According to recent reports, K-pop girl group NewJeans is accused of mimicking 1990s Mexican girl group Jeans. Last January, El Siglo noted that parallels between the two groups suggest NewJeans were inspired by Jeans. The investigation suggests that NewJeans, a newcomer to K-pop, was influenced by Jeans, which was prominent in Mexico in the 1990s.
Both groups had similar clothing and hairstyles. El Siglo highlighted that group names and promotional photographs resemble, spurring fan conversations on Facebook, now Meta. Jeans, which began in 1995 and performed till 2008, regrouped in 2015 as JNS. Domestic online forums have also recognized choreography and visual similarities between the two groups. Min Hee-jin, a representative from HYBE, had claimed that another rookie girl group, ILLIT, had imitated NewJeans’ costumes and haircuts, highlighting a trend of origin and influence difficulties in pop group styling.
