The mystery/horror film ‘Exhuma’ (2024) from South Korea is gaining immense popularity in North Korea. ‘Exhuma’ is becoming increasingly popular through word-of-mouth among North Hamgyong Province people, who are known to utilize Chinese cell phones, an informant informed DailyNK. The northernmost point of North Korea, where it borders China, is home to the Hamgyong Province. Since many of the locals there use cell phones that were imported from China for business purposes, they are more receptive to news and information coming from across the border. In addition, they frequently serve as intermediaries, choosing the materials that are presented to North Koreans, and transport cross-border cultural goods to the country’s interior regions. As per DailyNK, there is a swift surge in the demand for the South Korean film “Exhuma” in North Hamgyong Province cities like Hoeryŏng, and the word is rapidly spreading to other areas of the country. Specifically, a lot of teenagers are reportedly becoming interested in the movie after learning that it was a huge hit in South Korea, drawing in over 11 million viewers. According to the source, “When there are unfortunate events or illnesses in the home, North Koreans also follow the tradition of consulting fortune-tellers for guidance on how to take care of their relatives’ graves. This is because of the old myth that says bad things happen to a household when their ancestors are not happy where they are resting. For this reason, a lot of North Koreans find the movie’s plot intriguing.” North Korean rules currently in effect forbid citizens from adhering to superstitious beliefs and practices. However, many North Koreans risk breaching the law in order to consult fortune tellers because the rituals date back to the pre-modern era. One “illegal audiovisual content distributor” from Hoeryŏng claims, “I was reminded once again that the people’s craze for South Korean films cannot be stopped, no matter how sternly the government cracks down on illegal activities and instills fear in the people.” Every day, young kids approach me and ask me to make this movie. I would be well-off right now if I had the file.
