After recent events in Israel-Palestine, K-pop fans worldwide have become more politically engaged.
This increased awareness is seen in people’s empathy for Palestine. In solidarity, these fans are boycotting Starbucks and McDonald’s for their perceived support of Israel.
Overseas fans are criticizing K-pop idols wearing these brands.
Jeon So Mi deleted a TikTok video after receiving flak for using a Starbucks tumbler. Jake of ENHYPEN apologized to followers after sipping a Starbucks drink during a Weverse live.
Korean fans are now asking international followers to reconsider criticizing K-pop celebrities who utilize these brands because US firms do not own Starbucks and McDonald’s in Korea.
In truth, Starbucks America owns 0% of Starbucks Korea. Starbucks Korea was founded in 1999 as a 50/50 partnership with E-Mart In. (Shinsegae Group), however Starbucks sold its 50% investment in 2021. The company said, “Starbucks Coffee Company has agreed to sell its 50% ownership share of Starbucks Coffee Korea Co., Ltd. Joint venture partner E-Mart Inc. (Shinsegae Group) (” E- “) will acquire an additional 17.5% interest in Starbucks Coffee Korea Co., Ltd., giving E-Mart 67.5% ownership of Starbucks operations in South Korea.” Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC Private Limited bought Starbucks Coffee Korea’s remaining 32.5% shares.
