IU ‘Love Wins All’ MV controversy: alleged ableism

Her “Love Wins All” music video has sparked ableism allegations against IU.

K-netizens are praising BTS’ V’s yesterday’s MV, and V’s impressive performance beside IU is trending. The MV storyline and characters are being criticized for allegedly favoring able-bodied people without impairments.

Deaf IU and blind V witness non-disabled couples love through camcorders in the MV. Critics say the disabled, IU, and V are objectified, and the MV’s future without hate and discrimination is really the end of disability. Others argue that confining prejudiced people to disabilities itself prejudice.

With this incident, IU’s past interaction with wheelchair-bound actor Ha Ji Sung has surfaced. After meeting IU at the ‘Baeksang Arts Awards’ ceremony, Ha Ji Sung said IU’s idea to take pictures cheered him while he was wondering how he’d take a group shot with his wheelchair. IU’s consideration for disabled actors prompted comments like “You shouldn’t jump to conclusions based on the interpretation of a music video,” “You can’t say IU is belittling the disabled after looking at her actual actions,” and “It’s unfortunate the music video is being overly interpreted.”
