J-Hope withdraws as MC for military event, and Defense Minister warns against non-duty activities.
BTS’s J-Hope, who was set to host the ‘2023 International Military Cooking Competition,’ has had his role canceled due to the intervention of the Minister of National Defense, who has stated that celebrities serving in the military should not be assigned additional duties, allowing them to focus on their military service.
During a National Assembly Budget Settlement Special Committee meeting on the morning of the 7th, Minister Shin Won-sik claimed that he had advised not to assign responsibilities outside of military service to celebrity troops.
It was previously discussed that J-Hope (Jung Hoseok), who is presently an instructor at the 36th Infantry Division’s Basic Training Center, would serve as the co-host for the main competition of the ‘2023 International Military Cooking Competition.’ Minister Shin, however, was said to have put a stop to this scheme.
Regarding this issue, Shin said, “There was a suggestion to including a BTS member (J-Hope) to host the event,” and went on to say, “The fact that BTS members, including J-Hope, perform their military duties diligently, just like other soldiers, being such a good role model for the people, and considered it as their essential duty and refused (to allow them to participate).”
The majority of netizens applauded the decision not to include celebrity soldiers in military ceremonies. Many people expressed their hope that famous troops will continue to serve quietly in the military.
On April 18th of this year, J-Hope enlisted as an active-duty soldier. J-Hope, the second BTS member to enlist after Jin, is presently serving as a teacher at the 36th Infantry Division’s Basic Training Center, with his discharge date set for October 17, 2024. J-Hope and Jin are currently serving as active-duty soldiers in the army, while Suga began his alternative civilian service as a public service worker on September 22.
