K-pop girl groups took six of the twenty-one slots on Teen Vogue’s list of the “21 Best Girl Groups of All Time”! The American magazine released a list of what it believes to be the top 21 girl groups in history, spanning decades of renowned groups and going all the way back to The Supremes and The Pointer Sisters, in “celebration of the best and most exciting girl groups of the past and present.” Teen Vogue stated, “In actuality, the best girl groups aren’t the ones that simply take the temperature of a pop culture moment,” when describing the criteria for the list. They are the ones who leave their mark on that particular moment, defining it for years to come. You can see the top 21 girl group that accomplished this below. Wonder Girls One of K-pop’s first international trailblazers, Wonder Girls opened for the Jonas Brothers on their tour in the late aughts, according to Teen Vogue. In 2009, Yeeun, Sunye, Sunmi, Sohee, and Yubin paid homage to iconic groups from the American label’s golden era with their Motown-inspired song “Nobody,” making them the first Korean group to debut on the Billboard Hot 100. TWICE “Debuting in 2015 with ‘Like OOH-AHH,’ K-pop sweethearts TWICE stole our hearts from the start,” Teen Vogue said. The nine members of the group—Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu—have grown older and developed more sophisticated dance moves over time, but they have never lost the “one spark” that first won us over. “In one of K-pop’s most iconic opening lines, 2NE1 declare themselves ‘the best,’ and it’s hard to argue the point,” 2NE1 Teen Vogue noted. As the epitome of crazy b*tch energy, Bom, CL, Dara, and Minzy broke records and became the first K-pop girl group to go on a global tour, which helped them win over the West. Despite 2NE1’s 2016 breakup, solo artist CL surprised everyone by inviting the remaining three bandmates backstage at her Coachella set in 2022. “Made in the image of their ‘girl crush’ predecessors, BLACKPINK took the fierce and confident bangers to new global heights,” Teen Vogue wrote about the group. Apart from the fact that the music video for “DDU-DU DDU-DU” has had over 2 billion views, which is the highest amount of views for a K-pop group, Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa have gone on to become successful businesswomen and fashion icons, demonstrating that their discourse of self-empowerment is more than just lip service. Velvet in red “Red Velvet’s music can be bright pop or silky smooth R&B—either way, you’re in for girl group excellence when you tune in,” Teen Vogue noted. Since making their professional debuts in 2014 under the illustrious K-pop label SM Entertainment (Yeri joined the group in 2015), Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, and Joy have earned a spot on our list with each creative music video that has been produced. The Generation of Girls According to Teen Vogue, “you’ll be hard pressed to find a K-pop girl group with a more robust legacy than Girls’ Generation,” from the experimental “I Got a Boy” to the genre-defining success “Gee.” Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, Seohyun, and previous member Jessica rose to prominence in 2009 and soon became one of Asia’s top acts. Girls’ Generation took a break in 2017 and came back five years later to give us another dose of amazing pop music.
