To Lisa, BTS & IU Fanclubs Deleted From Weibo Due To Chinese Law Violations

‘Lisa’s Weibo account erased’ has been a popular subject lately.
ON November 4, reports said BLACKPINK’s Lisa’s personal Weibo account was deleted. The short message “This account can no longer be viewed due to reports of violations of laws, regulations and the Weibo Community Agreement” appeared when reporters sought to access Lisa’s Weibo account. It spread reports that Lisa’s activities in China were banned.

Entertainment industry insiders believe Lisa’s Paris nude display was the main cause. Lisa shocked fans in September by announcing her three-day cabaret show participation in Paris. Due of her 19+ shows, most netizens believe the female star breached China’s celebrity dignity regulations.

Gambling, drug usage, violence, and promoting obscene performances are prohibited under celebrity dignity laws. Lisa has the most Chinese recognition and popularity in BLACKPINK. Several Chinese programs have featured her. Thus, Lisa’s SNS may have been restricted by the Chinese government to mitigate her inflammatory performances.

China has closed and suspended many SNS accounts. Many Weibo fanclubs that overfundraise or post improper content have been banned.

In 2021, around 20 Korean celebrity Weibo fanclub accounts, including IU, Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon, Jang Won-young, and others, were suspended for a month. BTS Jimin’s fanclub account was suspended for significant fundraising and airplane promotion for a birthday party. According to the government, fan-supporting activities contradicted its policy of money sharing for ‘common prosperity’. Therefore, K-pop fans’ fundraising culture and other income-inequality-causing actions are regulated.

A newspaper reported, “Some Korean entertainment companies are exploiting idol culture among Chinese fans for profits. This is Communist Party ‘censorship’ in politics, society, and popular culture.

Weibo is the principal celebrity-fan communication platform in China, where Instagram and Facebook are outlawed. Lisa’s fans were upset when her account was removed. Some netizens utilized VPN to penetrate China’s Great Firewall to find out why Lisa’s account was deleted and were astonished to learn it was for ‘violation of laws’.
