Zico criticized for racist slur in 2010 rap song
Zico is facing criticism for his 2010 rap song “If I Ain’t Got Jjanggae”‘s racist epithet. Zico’s 2010 bonus track in his mixtape ‘Zico on the Block’, “If I Ain’t Got Jjanggae,” a parody of Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You,” has been criticized on Chinese internet communities like Weibo. The lyrics describe Zico, a trainee, becoming bored with getting Chinese food every day. Chinese netizens criticize his lyrics, “I loathe jjanggae. Today I’m full yet not full. Bloated… I’ll become Chinese,” and he used “jjanggae,” a pejorative slur for Chinese people. After the incident, Chinese netizens left vomit emojis and hateful remarks on Zico’s social media. Zico’s digital song “SPOT!” with BLACKPINK’s Jennie topped local and international music charts on his 10th anniversary as a solo artist.
